Transition Team Issues In Dallas
Dallas County TX is building a new tower to house 2,300 inmates. It is designed to replace the Suzanne Kays jail which is being torn down next year, but construction delays now push the opening to 2009.
The new jail will operate under a direct supervision model for the first time in Dallas. Federal consultants have complained that a transition team has not yet been put in place.
“To underestimate the immediate need for a transition team of sufficient size for the South Tower project would be unwise and irresponsible,” the National Institute of Corrections’ report said. “A premature opening will likely result in operational problems that could jeopardize public safety.”
However, Sheriff Lupe Valdez says the construction delays will help them get ready.
“If the building was ready this year, it would have really hurt us,” Sheriff Valdez said. “But it hasn’t hurt us because the opening date keeps moving.”
