St. Lawrence County NY’s new jail was built with a controversial labor agreement that some felt would be costly and wouldn’t work.
But yesterday, county officials ceremoniously cut the ribbon marking the opening of the new $32 million correctional facility. Retired Sheriff Gary Jarvis were among a number of judges, county, state and local officials who were on hand for opening ceremonies. The 164 bed jail came in slightly under budget and on time. Inmates will now begin being moved into the facility at undisclosed times for security reasons. The jail features “pods” that can hold up to 186 prisoners should the state allow the county to double bunk.
There is a video of the opening at WNYF-TV.
