Cumberland County Prison Expansion
Cumberland County PA officials broke ground Monday on a multimillion dollar expansion and renovation of the Cumberland County Prison.
It’s a project that is expected to make the prison a much safer place. Several years from now, there will be a brand new work-release wing and a female inmate wing in the prison. In the back of the building, space for 160 more beds for men will be added, and the inside will get a makeover. When officials talk about safety in a prison, a lot of it has to do with space …
The current central processing area is used to process prisoners being released and those coming in; two sets of traffic patterns that can get chaotic and dangerous. “You have people that have access to your door in and out, and you want to make sure it’s the right one,” said [Deputy Warden Mike] Carey. “You don’t like them to cross contaminate, for contraband reasons.”There are also plans for separate prisoner intake and release centers.
The Cumberland County prison’s current bed capacity is 398. When the project is done, they expect to have a 708-bed capacity.
